The information listed below is a quick "snap-shot" of SEO as it relates to all web projects. Detailed information about SEO will be discussed with you during your FREE SEO consultation with Web Design Project Manager, Jason Smith.
The Basics
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the method of web design which is used to Optimize your web site so that Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, can "index" your web site. The "indexing" of your web site is how search engines list your web site in their Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
Search engines use little programs called “crawlers,” or “bots,” to index a web page. Basically these crawlers travel through cyber space reading every web page they can get to. Once they reach a web page they will collect the content and follow any links to other web pages they can find and, in turn, index those pages as well.
So, in other words, when the user enters text into a search engine, the search engine is not searching the internet, it is searching its own database.
Unique and Relevant Content
The top three search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN) ignore the “Meta Keywords Tag.” The best way to get a high ranking search result is to use unique and relevant content. In addition, building your content around “keywords” will also result in higher placement in search engine results. The Meta Keywords Tag should be used to reinforce your content and should be available for other, less popular, search engines to index.
How a Search Engine Calculates Relevance
Relevance is the deciding factor on what placement your site will get in a search engines results page. Once a site is indexed, the search engine will count the number of times a word, group of words, or phrase is used throughout an entire web site.
Google Adds ‘Page Rank’
Google adds another dimension to search engine results with their patented algorithm called Page Rank. Basically, Page Rank adds up the number times another web page links to your web site. Google counts these as “votes.”
Note: Google also “ranks” the sites that link to you depending on the number of votes that site has. So, it is a very intricate algorithm based on how many sites link to a site that links to you.
